1. With your non-dominant hand, hold on to the lid of the lighter with your thumb and index finger, hinge pointing down. 2. “One niner niner, we are ready for takeoff”…... Hit the lighter from underneath using the palm of your other hand. It’s important that you just hit the case of the lighter, not the lid, because the flight pattern we’re looking for is a smooth arc from one hand to the other. By whacking the bottom case of the lighter, you’ll open it, and it will fly off spinning in a nice arc over to your other hand. 3. “Incoming!” Here is where the men are separated from the boys. As the lighter completes its arc and nears your non-dominant hand, wait until it has completed the semi-circle and then hit it from underneath with the palm of your non-dominant hand. The challenge is to time the counter-hit correctly so that when you hit the lighter, the inside of your palm will hit the flint wheel. 4. This will (if you are lucky/clever) ignite the lighter and at the same time send it off flying back to the original launching point still lit. The first forty thousand times you attempt to do this, the lighter will most likely end up in the fish tank, or on top of the dog. It is no wonder that the animal kingdom remains put off by lighter tricking [see above]. 5. “We have touchdown” You whacked it. You lit it. You sent it spinning back to it’s point of origin. So catch it. It is lit. You have completed your mission. Go hose off the dog and grab yourself a suitable refreshment. Alert the media – you did film your success didn’t you?
